The first computer historically was made by ENIAC in 1946, a huge 30 ton machine, with 6,000 switches, 19,000 vaccum cubes and could add 5,000 numbers in seconds. After this there was a boom in the construction of better, faster, smaller and more advanced computers. In the late 1930s, John Atanasoff and Clifford Bell began building a device that would allow them to solve large linear algebraic equations, they called it ABC( Atanasoff Berry Computer). It worked based on binary numbers but in the 1940s Atanstoff left for the navy and the computer was left abandoned. Then along came a man called Sperry Rand whonheld the rights to Eckert and Mauchly's original UNIVAC patents and sued Honeywell for royalty payments, however Atanasoff won the battle. ABC however could not be reprogrammed and never became fully operational.
